Our Story

Cantref first opened its doors 65 years ago and is still proudly run by Mrs. Evans. The journey began when the family was asked to offer pony rides on their shepherding ponies to families camping nearby. From those humble beginnings, the herd grew, leading to school visits and unforgettable holiday rides across the Brecon Beacons.

At its peak in the late ‘70s, Cantref was home to over 100 horses. Today, the riding centre has carefully settled at around 45 horses and ponies of various sizes and temperaments, each chosen for their suitability for mountain riding.

Cantref Riding Centre welcomes riders of all abilities, offering everything from gentle 20-minute rides to full-day treks and immersive riding holidays. Our Welsh Cob crosses are known for their steady temperaments and surefooted nature, making them the perfect companions for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Brecon Beacons.

What can you expect?

Your Bespoke Riding Getaway: Begin your Cantref adventure with a relaxing evening arrival, settling into your accommodation for a peaceful night's sleep. The following morning, at 8:45 am, meet your friendly guide who will help you choose the ideal horse for your ride. Assist with grooming and tacking up, then enjoy a morning tea break before setting off to explore the stunning mountains. After your ride, participate in horse care and join your guide for afternoon tea and cake to reflect on the day and plan for the next. As the sun sets, your wood fired hot tub will be ready for you to soak beneath the breathtaking Dark Sky Reserve. The second day is tailored to your preferences, with options for early finishes or riding lessons.
